Buoyed by the passage of Measure F this month, the City Council agreed unanimously Tuesday to try to wrest authority over the closed El Toro Marine base from the Orange County Board of Supervisors.
The first step is a letter to the Department of Defense asking that the El Toro Reuse Planning Authority again be recognized as the local redevelopment agency for the site.
Mayor Christina L. Shea’s letter to the Defense Department notes that Measure F--which requires that the county win two-thirds voter approval before it can plan for an airport, large jail near homes or hazardous-waste site--passed by a sizable majority.
Shea will send a similar letter to the county’s Board of Supervisors asking for its support in the transfer of power.
