Avitabile Resigns as Girls’ Basketball Coach at El Toro
Vincent Avitabile, under whom El Toro developed into one of Orange County’s top girls’ basketball programs, has resigned as its head coach.
Avitabile, who is conducting basketball seminars in Japan this week, faxed his resignation to El Toro girls’ Athletic Director Sheri Ross on Friday.
“We’re going to try not to skip a beat,†Ross said Saturday. “We’re going to open the position as soon as possible.
“Obviously. it’s a very high profile program. I told the girls on Friday we would get a very good coach and move on.â€
The program compiled a 90-25 record in Avitabile’s four seasons. He was instrumental in developing complementary talent to four-time county scoring champion Giuliana Mendiola, which resulted in three consecutive league titles, and a section final appearance last season and semifinal appearance this season.
El Toro was 23-7 this season and reached the Division I-A semifinals.
