COSTA MESA

Two Costa Mesa police canines, Belgian Malinois named Bart and Nerop, were each outfitted Tuesday with bulletproof vests.
The protective gear was made available through the efforts of Costa Mesa resident Casey Donahue, 36, and his girlfriend, Jana Herbert. The couple spent a year raising $3,700 to buy the vests for canine units at local police stations.
They have provided two vests to the Huntington Beach Police Department and will soon donate some to Fountain Valley police as well.
Vest-A-Dog, a nonprofit group, also donated $120 to the cause.
