* Sales by U.S. wholesalers rose 1.6% in November, outpacing a 1.1% rise in inventories, the Commerce Department said. Even with the buildup, inventories remain lean. The inventory-to-sales ratio, which measures the time goods sit at wholesalers, fell to 1.28 months in November from 1.29 months in October.

* Acclaim Entertainment Inc. said net income dropped 96% in its fiscal first quarter to $434,000, or 1 cent a share, as sales slipped 3.4% to $101.2 million. Analysts were expecting a profit increase to 20 cents, according to First Call/Thomson Financial. The company blamed the delayed release of games tied to the “South Park” animated TV series and sluggish sales of its titles for Nintendo Co.’s Nintendo 64 console.
