Site Changed for Pacifica Basketball Game

The Southern Section Division II-A girls’ basketball semifinal game between Pacifica and Artesia has been moved to a new location. It will be played tonight at Santiago High.
The site was changed on Friday because of a scheduling conflict at the original location, La Quinta.
Also, it was announced that tonight’s Division IV-A girls’ semifinal between Calvary Chapel and Orange Lutheran will be played at Brea Olinda High.
Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.
* Alicia Seevers, recently named girls’ athletic director, resigned as Orange High’s girls’ basketball coach and was replaced by former assistant Cindi Judd.
* Cal State Fullerton senior Erin Whiteside was chosen to the GTE Academic All-District VIII second team and UC Irvine senior Shannon Anders was selected to the third team.
Whiteside has a 3.86 GPA in Communications, and Anders, a Psychology major, has a 3.73 GPA.
SOCCER
Lerato Simelane, a striker from North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake High, has committed to play soccer at UC Irvine, Tim Simelane, his father, said.
Simelane sat out this soccer season after suffering a broken collarbone while playing for Harvard-Westlake’s football team. A 5-foot-10, 180-pound running back, he gained more than 1,500 yards rushing.
Last soccer season, Simelane scored nine goals.
* Laurel Allen, of Capistrano Valley High, signed a letter of intent to play soccer for Long Beach State, the college announced. Allen, a defender, is also a member of the Irvine Strikers Club.
FOOTBALL
The 22nd Orange County Football Coaches Clinic will be held today at the Santa Ana Elks Lodge.
Guest speakers include Rich Ellerson, defensive coordinator for Arizona; Ulima Afoa, tight ends and special teams coach for San Diego State; Dave Lay, offensive coordinator for San Diego State, and Bob Johnson, coach of Mission Viejo High. The clinic is free. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m.
* The Fearsome Foursome--former Los Angeles Ram defensive linemen Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen, Lamar Lundy and Rosey Grier--will appear at the Orange County Marketplace on March 11-12 in support of the Deacon Jones Foundation.
Proceeds from autograph and memorabilia sales will support scholarships for disadvantaged youths. The players will appear daily from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Orange County Fairgrounds.
FIELD HOCKEY
Cathryn Perkins of Edison High signed a letter of intent to attend Pacific. Perkins led the Charger field hockey team to a 17-0 record last season, and its third consecutive Sunset League title. She is also a standout in soccer and track.
GOLF
The Southern California PGA Foundation will conduct a workshop designed for college-bound golfers at Newport Beach Country Club on March 5, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Topics for discussion include scholarship availability, eligibility standards, resume writing and the NCAA Clearinghouse.
Panel experts include Keith Shackelford, director of compliance at UC Irvine; Kurt Shuette, director of golf at USC; Sue Ewart, women’s golf coach at Long Beach State; W. Paul Donovan, former vice president of the SCPGA junior golf association, and Travis Johnson of the UCLA men’s golf team.
The cost is $29 for two and $40 for three, which includes grounds passes for the final round of the Toshiba Senior Classic. Information: (714) 776-4653.
VOLLEYBALL
Lauren Ruzicka, a setter from Laguna Hills, signed with James Madison, Laguna Beach volleyball club Coach Michael Soylular said Friday. Ruzicka was a first-team All-Sea View League selection last season.
WATER POLO
Becca Peterson, co-captain of the girls’ water polo team at Santa Margarita, has committed to Loyola Marymount, her father, John Peterson, said Friday.
