Although Moorpark High School placed second in a recent Ventura County Academic Decathlon, the reigning national champion will compete in the statewide contest in Los Angeles next month.

Simi Valley High School won the contest with a score of 50,195 points out of a possible 60,000, but Moorpark’s score of 49,528 qualified it for the state contest as a wild-card entry.

“After Sunday, it was kind of disappointing,†said Moorpark’s team captain, Tiffany Chou, 17. “So now it’s really exciting to know that we have another level of competition.â€

Moorpark co-coach Anna Karchem said she knew that the team’s score was competitive, but didn’t expect the school to be the top-scoring wild-card team.

Just a few days after the county contest, the team was back at work studying.

“We know we have a tough few weeks ahead, but we’re very excited,†she said.

The statewide competition is scheduled March 17-19 at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
