Wooden Award Candidates Named

UCLA’s Jason Kapano and Stanford’s Casey Jacobsen and Jarron Collins are among the 30 top candidates for the John R. Wooden Award.

In addition to Stanford, five other schools had two players on the list-- Arizona (Loren Woods and Michael Wright), Duke (Shane Battier and Jason Williams), Illinois (Cory Bradford and Frank Williams), Michigan State (Charlie Bell and Jason Richardson) and Tennessee (Vincent Yarbrough and Tony Harris).

Ballots for the 2001 Wooden Award for college basketball’s player of the year, to be presented April 7, will be sent to 1,000 voters sports writers and sportscasters on March 5, and are due back three weeks later.

Others on the list are Casey Calvary of Gonzaga; Kenny Gregory of Kansas; Eddie Griffin of Seton Hall; Udonis Haslem of Florida; Brendon Haywood of North Carolina; Joe Johnson of Arkansas; Kaspars Kambala of Nevada Las Vegas;; Mike Kelley of Wisconsin; Terence Morris of Maryland; Albert Mouring of Connecticut; Troy Murphy of Notre Dame; Robert O’Kelley of Wake Forest; Kareem Rush of Missouri; Kenny Satterfield of Cincinnati; Preston Shumpert of Syracuse; Jamaal Tinsley of Iowa State, and Brandon Wolfram of Texas El Paso.

Saturday’s game between Arkansas and Grambling State has been postponed because of possible travel problems. No date has been decided for the makeup game. . . . Duke freshman swingman Andre Sweet has been suspended indefinitely for academic reasons. . . . Forward Rodney Crawford of Cincinnati will miss at least six weeks because of a broken ankle. . . . Cal State Fullerton swingman Brandon Campbell, sidelined since the season-opener against Oregon State Nov. 17, will be available to play Saturday against Northern Arizona.
