Paraclete 14, Montclair Prep 12--Linebacker Mike Moore stopped Gary Sonkur short of the goal line on a two-point conversion attempt with 2:27 remaining as the Spirits (13-1) held on to win the Division XII championship at Los Angeles Valley College.
After Sonkur had scored on a 31-yard run moments earlier, Moore said he had an idea what to expect next.
“We knew what the play was going to be,” Moore said. “I just threw everything I had left in me to make the stop.”
That turned out the be the last chance for the top-seeded Mounties (13-1), who didn’t get the ball back again.
In the end, it was a night for Paraclete’s defense that held Montclair Prep to 208 yards.
It was an impressive accomplishment when considering the Mounties had been averaging more than 46 points a game.
Paraclete, which won its fourth consecutive division title and second consecutive in Division XII, finished with only 137 yards rushing.
The most the Spirits could muster was 51 yards in 11 carries by Michael Washington.
