A fire early Wednesday at a commercial site in Anaheim forced the evacuation of residents from a nearby 18-unit apartment building, authorities said.

The fire destroyed three of the six units in the structure on Ball Road, but about 65 firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading, Anaheim Fire Battalion Chief Kent Mastain said.

Numerous 911 calls came in about 12:49 a.m., Mastain said. It took firefighters almost an hour to contain the blaze. Damage to the contents and structure was estimated at $1 million.

One firefighter sustained a shoulder injury and was treated by his personal physician, Mastain said.

The residents were allowed to return to their apartments shortly after the fire was extinguished.
