SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO
City officials support Riverside County’s plans for another freeway linked to Orange County but are adamantly opposed to a possible freeway running from San Juan Capistrano to Lake Elsinore near Ortega Highway.
The local reaction comes after a meeting Monday between Riverside County and Orange County transportation authorities proposing three potential routes to link the Corona Freeway in Riverside County to Interstate 5 or the Foothill Transportation Corridor.
The San Juan route would replace or run near Ortega Highway, which connects Interstate 5 to the Corona Freeway and cuts through the bottom third of the 135,000-acre Cleveland National Forest.
City Manager George Scarborough said an additional connecting highway would be good for the area so long as it isn’t along Ortega Highway.
