Hart’s Shields Signs With Devil Rays
Jamie Shields of Hart High has signed with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Shields, a 16th-round selection in June and the Times’ 1999 player of the year as a junior, signed Friday, one day before he was scheduled to leave for Louisiana State University.
He will not report until Sept. 13, when he will join the major league club for a series at Anaheim. He then will report to Tampa Bay’s instructional league team in Florida.

Craig Kuzmic had three hits--including his 18th home run--drove in two runs and scored twice to help Lancaster to a 6-2 victory over Rancho Cucamonga at the Hangar on Tuesday night.
Peanut Williams also had two RBIs for the JetHawks (36-16 in the second half), who tied a club record with 76 victories overall this season with 18 games remaining.
Jeff Heaverlo (13-5) allowing eight hits and two earned runs in eight innings. He walked two batters and struck out eight.
