Despite China’s objection, the president of Taiwan will be permitted to stop in Los Angeles on his way to Central America later this month. The arrangement is designed “for the safety and convenience of the traveler,” State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said. “There are no meetings expected with any [Clinton] administration officials.” China objected to the U.S. decision to issue Chen Shui-bian a visa for the layover in Los Angeles and warned that it would damage U.S. ties with China severely.
