The revitalization of swing music has ignited interest in traditional, or classic, jazz. This weekend’s Costa Mesa/Orange County Classic Jazz Festival, today through Sunday at the Doubletree Hotel Orange County Airport, features 18 classic jazz bands offering music from the 1920s through the ‘50s. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band from New Orleans, the Jim Cullum Band, Night Blooming Jazzmen, the Yve Evans Quintet, the Mike Henebry Orchestra and Bryan Shaw with the High Sierra Jazz Band (see feature, Page XX) are among the acts.

The City Art Walk showcases the city’s art community. The event features receptions, artist demonstrations, lectures, refreshments and live music. Galleries include Peter Blake, Campbell-Thiebaud, Galerie 224, J. Kamin, Marion Meyer, Diane Nelson and Elena Zass. A courtesy shuttle is available at 6:15 p.m. at the Laguna Art Museum, which also is open during the walk. A walk is scheduled the first Thursday of each month.

Dog Talent Show
Some of Orange County’s hottest dogs will compete for top barking rights at the “Dog Days of Summer” canine talent show and competition tonight at the Fullerton Market. The competitors--chosen through auditions--will display their unique talents in a two-hour match with five competitions, including best-dressed dog, funniest pet trick, “waggiest” tail, ugliest dog and dog that most resembles its owner. “Celebrity” canine Cody the Talking Dog, whose 30-word vocabulary has landed him spots on the “Today Show” and the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” will chat it up with the crowd. A variety of animal organizations will sponsor information booths.
