St. Matthew’s Chamber Offers Eight Concerts
St. Matthew’s Chamber Orchestra will present eight concerts during its 16th season at the church, 1031 Bienvenda Ave., Pacific Palisades, beginning Oct. 6, when conductor-founder Thomas Neenan conducts a program of music by Gershwin, Stravinsky, Copland and Joplin. Delores Stevens will be piano soloist in Gershwin’s original jazz-band version of “Rhapsody in Blue.â€
Basso Louis Lebherz will be soloist on the Nov. 10 program, which offers music by Mozart and Ives, as well as spirituals and American folk songs. The orchestra will play its annual family Christmas concert Dec. 10. On Jan. 19, guests will be the Hollywood Brass Ensemble, with organ and percussion, its program featuring a new work by Nick Lane, and music by Bach, Gabrieli, Sousa and Saint-Saens.
“A Musical Looking Glass†on Feb. 16 offers music by Bach, Stravinsky and Martinu. Soprano Maurita Phillips-Thornburgh returns, March 16, in the orchestra’s program of Ravel, Mozart, Falcone and Takemitsu.
The popular trio of women’s voices, Voxfire, performs on the series May 11, along with an instrumental ensemble, in music by Monteverdi, Purcell and Chiara Margarita Cozzolani.
The chamber orchestra closes the season, June 1, with a Mozart and Bach program.
