A woman was shot to death Saturday night in front of horrified neighbors on a quiet residential street in Santa Ana by her estranged husband who later took his own life, police said.

The couple argued outside a home in the 1200 block of Linda Way before the 44-year-old woman was shot in the head about 8:30 p.m., and then run over by the 43-year-old man in his car, said police Sgt. Raul Luna.

The gunman then sped away and parked outside a home in the 2400 block of West LaVerne Avenue, where he fatally shot himself in his car, Luna said.

The couple’s names were not released by police Saturday night

Witnesses said the man grabbed the woman and attempted to drag her to his car. When she resisted, they said, he shot her. Neighbors said they heard three or four gunshots.

Luna said police initially received a report of a domestic disturbance about 8:30 p.m. The first officer to arrive thought the woman was a hit-and-run victim until he saw the gunshot wound, Luna said. Police then received a call reporting gunshots outside the West LaVerne Avenue address about 9:30 p.m., Luna said.
