Strong Hitting Gives Titans an 8-3 Victory Over UCLA

Robert Guzman, Jake Epstein and Chris Stringfellow drove in two runs each and four Titan pitchers held UCLA scoreless until the ninth inning as Cal State Fullerton beat the Bruins, 8-3, Tuesday night at Los Angeles.

The Titans scored two runs in the first on Guzman’s RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Epstein. Back-to-back doubles by David Bacani and Guzman gave them another run in the fifth.

Cal State Fullerton (25-14) broke it open with three more runs in the sixth, Epstein hitting a home run and Stringfellow a two-run single. An unearned run in the eighth made it 7-0 and Bacani hit a home run in the ninth to close out the scoring for the Titans.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Vanguard 9, Westmont 7--Kevin Candelaria had two home runs, a single and four RBIs for host Vanguard (8-35, 3-23).

In nonconference baseball:

Chapman 11, Whittier 7--Jason Miller doubled, homered and drove in three runs for visiting Chapman (23-8-1). Teammate Eric Albright had three hits, including his eighth home run of the season.

The Master’s 6, Concordia 5--Host Concordia (25-20) gave up two unearned runs in the second inning to help Master’s (30-7) build an early 5-0 lead.

In men’s golf:

In the Big West conference championships--UC Irvine finished fifth and had two golfers finish in the top 10 at the par-72 Serrano Country Club in El Dorado Hills.

UCI freshman Mike Lavery (Irvine High) finished sixth at 218 after shooting a two-over 74 in Tuesday’s final round. Freshman Jeff Coburn was 10th at 220 after carding a par 72 in the final round.

Idaho won the team title, defeating New Mexico State in a playoff.

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 2-1, Concordia 0-0--Molly Beckett scored Dawn Lopez with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to give host Chapman (27-7) the sweep. Linsey Buendia pitched a seven-hitter to get the victory for the Panthers.

In the first game, Tiffany Hoskins pitched a six-hit shutout with six strikeouts. Leslie Prochaska and Katie Chauvin each drove in a run in the fourth inning.
