Ulla Isaksson; Novelist, Bergman Scriptwriter
Ulla Isaksson, 83, author on women’s issues who penned two scripts for Ingmar Bergman films. Isaksson, whose first novel, “The Tree,†was published in 1940, scripted Bergman’s “The Virgin Spring†in 1960 and “Brink of Life†in 1958. Among her other novels were “Paradise Square,†“The Women’s House†and “The Birthday.†With her late husband, Erik Hjalmar Linder, she wrote a two-part biography of Swedish novelist Elin Wagner that is considered the foremost work on the feminist writer. After Linder’s death in 1994, Isaksson wrote “The Book About E†about him. The Swedish literary society De Nio, to which she belonged, last year awarded Isaksson $11,400 for her “penetrating, clear and bold depiction of women’s reality.†On Monday in Stockholm.
