UNITED STATES Andre Agassi, 29, right-handed. Davis Cup record: singles, 28-5.

Rejoined team this year after missing all of 1999, essentially in protest over the dismissal of the team’s long-time doctor, George Fareed. Fareed returned this year.

Alex O’Brien, 30, right-handed. Davis Cup record: singles, 1-1; doubles, 1-3.

Versatile, as indicated by his having played with four partners. Jared Palmer will be his fifth.

Jared Palmer, 28, right-handed. Davis Cup record: singles, 1-0; doubles, 2-2.

His last Davis Cup appearance was in 1995. That year, he won both his doubles matches--against France and Italy--with Reneberg.

Pete Sampras, 28, right-handed. Davis Cup record: singles, 13-6; doubles, 4-1.

The winner of 12 Grand Slam singles titles started his Davis Cup career in 1992 with John McEnroe. Sampras and McEnroe, the current captain, won both times they played together in 1992, against Sweden and Switzerland.

Martin Damm, 27, right-handed. Davis Cup record: singles, 1-3; doubles, 0-4.

Sixteen career doubles titles on ATP Tour. Last weekend, Damm reached the finals of the Ericsson Open with first-time partner Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia.

Slava Dosedel, 29, right-handed. Davis Cup record: singles, 3-6.

Three singles titles on ATP Tour. The eclectic man of Czech tennis is an actor, a vegetarian and the father of an 11-month-old toddler, Jakub. His best Grand Slam singles finish was the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open last year.

Jiri Novak, 25, right-handed. Davis Cup record: singles, 5-1; doubles, 4-0.

Two singles titles, 10 doubles titles on ATP Tour. Won all three of his matches in the first round against Britain, beating Jamie Delgado and Tim Henman and Henman and Neil Broad in doubles.

David Rikl, 29, left-handed. Davis Cup record: singles, 1-2; doubles, 4-1.

Sixteen career doubles titles on ATP Tour. Rikl and Jiri Novak reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open this year.

Jan Kukal, captain.

Kukal played on the Czech team 16 times, starting in 1968.
