Two people, including a 1-year-old girl, were injured during a mobile home fire Wednesday afternoon in the southern reaches of Ventura County near Malibu, authorities said.

The blaze started in some brush shortly before 4 p.m. and then spread a few feet to the mobile home, located off a dirt road near the 12000 block of Pacific Coast Highway, authorities said.

The cause is unknown, and the damage was still being assessed Wednesday night.

“We’re still talking to family members and trying to figure out how it happened,†said Joe Luna, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department.

The mobile home and a connecting carport were destroyed, and an adjacent house received minor smoke damage.

Several in the 10-member family were home at the time, Luna said. The mother in the family, who was not identified, unsuccessfully tried fighting the fire with a garden hose.

The woman’s 1-year-old daughter suffered a scrape on her head when her 5-year-old brother carried her out of a bedroom to safety, Luna said.

The girl and her aunt, Maria De Jesus Morales, 35, who lives next door and suffered smoke inhalation, were treated at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, Luna said.

The 10 people whose home burned down and nine relatives who live next door accepted temporary housing and food from the American Red Cross.
