Bolsa Grande Suffers 18th Straight Loss
C.J. Zuniga rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns Thursday as Costa Mesa defeated Bolsa Grande, 47-0, handing the host Matadors their 18th consecutive loss.
Zuniga took a delayed handoff and went 29 yards for a touchdown on the Mustangs’ first possession. After Shaun Ferryman blocked a Bolsa Grande punt and returned it to the Matador 1, Zuniga got the call again and put Costa Mesa up 14-0 only 4:34 into the first quarter.
Senior quarterback David Weir had a hand in all three second-quarter touchdowns as Costa Mesa (2-0) upped the lead to 33-0 before halftime.
Weir completed three consecutive passes on the first drive of the quarter, the last one to a leaping Ferryman for a 12-yard touchdown and a 20-0 lead.
Weir added a nine-yard scoring pass to Willie Franco before connecting again with Ferryman on a 32-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of the half.
Bolsa Grande (0-2) struggled on offense for the second straight week, netting negative yardage through three quarters and getting outgained, 382-21, in the game.
The Matadors moved into Costa Mesa territory only twice, turning over the ball on downs once and having a 29-yard field-goal attempt blocked in the final period.
Costa Mesa tacked on two second-half touchdowns. Anthony Grubisich, the Mustangs’ 255-pound fullback, rumbled 24 yards to set up his own one-yard score, and reserve quarterback Patrick Hulliger threw a 19-yard scoring pass to Louis Day.
