A 19-year-old Ventura man was killed in a single-car crash early Monday after he lost control of his car on Highway 101 near the Santa Barbara County line, CHP officials said.
Leonardo Martinez was driving south in the fast lane at high speed when his vehicle drifted into the highway’s gravel-covered median and spun out of control, said Officer Steve Neumann. The car slid across the highway and struck a raised curb, causing the vehicle to flip over on the rocky shoulder next to the beach.
Martinez, who was not wearing a seat belt, died instantly of massive head injuries, authorities said.
The CHP said there was no indication Martinez had been drinking. Neumann said Martinez might have fallen asleep at the wheel.
