City Hall Steps Will Echo With El Grito

A celebration to commemorate Mexican Independence Day will be held Wednesday at City Hall.
The annual fiesta, billed as a celebration of El Grito (the scream), will feature music, community groups and a speech by Everto Ruiz, a Cal State Northridge Chicano studies professor.
Among the performers will be Mariachi Est es Mi Mexico, Mariachi Los Halcones and Trio Los Gallos Costenos.
Mexico’s Declaration of Independence took place at midnight on Sept. 15, 1810, in the town of Dolores Hidalgo in Guanajuato.
There, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla delivered a lively speech in front of a crowd of parishioners.
Each year the city of San Fernando celebrates the historic event on the steps of City Hall, 117 Macneil St.. Wednesday’s fiesta begins at 6 p.m.
