2 Kids Exposed to Rabid Bat at Park

Two Irvine children who touched a brown bat at a park last weekend probably will need a series of rabies shots, Irvine police said Saturday.
The children, 6 and 9, found the California brown bat at a park Oct. 24, picked it up and placed it beneath a tree, Irvine police said.
The parents of the children called police, who sent an animal services officer to retrieve the bat and take it to the Orange County Health Care Agency for testing. The bat tested positive for rabies, police said.
Children should be warned never to approach or touch wild animals, Irvine police said. The most common animals to be affected by rabies are raccoons, skunks, bats and foxes. Stray dogs and cats can be exposed as well.
