Golden West Beats Orange Coast in Water Polo
Golden West, ranked second in the state in men’s water polo, beat Orange Coast, 7-5, in the championship game of the Cypress tournament Saturday.
Danny Johnson scored two goals in the third quarter and Logan Shaw scored one in the fourth to help the Rustlers.
Orange Coast’s Matt McKinney scored two goals in the first period to give the Pirates an early lead. Golden West came back in the second quarter, scoring three goals to Orange Coast’s one.
The Pirate defense shut out Golden West’s top scorer, Kevin Marsh, limiting him to one attempt in the game.
In the Long Beach women’s water polo tournament:
Riverside 5, Golden West 4--Riverside’s Devorie Witt scored the game-winner in the championship final against Golden West (24-1-1), which is ranked No. 1 in the state.
Jennifer Breslin had four goals for Riverside and Chelsea Rowlands scored two for Golden West.
In Mission Conference Central Division football games:
Palomar 59, Golden West 14--Former Servite quarterback Greg Cicero passed for 368 yards and six touchdowns for host Palomar (5-1, 1-0).
James Goins (El Modena High) returned an interception 13 yards for a touchdown for Palomar.
Brandon White rushed for a season-high 96 yards for Golden West (0-6, 0-1).
Riverside 34, Saddleback 20--Saddleback gave up 27 points in the second quarter and lost at home.
Saddleback quarterback Adam Hoover, who set a school record with 55 attempts, threw a 32-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to cut Riverside’s lead to 27-20.
Saddleback (2-4, 0-1) got the ball back but turned it over on downs at the Riverside 14 late in the game.
After another Riverside punt, Saddleback had one more chance, but Tiger defensive back Adam Rivers intercepted a pass and returned it 72 yards for a touchdown with 2:17 left.
Hoover finished 27 of 55 for 316 yards and threw two touchdown passes and two interceptions.
Riverside is 2-4, 1-0.
In a Northern Division game:
Cerritos 40, Orange Coast 17--Visiting Cerritos (5-1, 1-0) opened a 40-3 lead in winning its fifth consecutive game.
Jimmie Banks rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown and Jared Flint passed for 208 yards and a touchdown for OCC (2-4, 0-1).
