FIVE KEY MOMENTS
1 The fired-up Trojans run onto the field at Notre Dame Stadium, kneel as if in prayer in the end zone, watch R. Jay Soward dance with the cheerleaders--and then jump to a 21-0 lead.
*
2 With USC’s 21-point lead down to 24-10, USC quarterback Mike Van Raaphorst drops back to pass but is hit by a blitzing Ron Israel and fumbles. Anthony Denman returns ball to the USC 36 before Van Raaphorst tackles him. Notre Dame scores to cut the lead to 24-16.
*
3 With time running down and USC leading by five, Notre Dame quarterback Jarious Jackson, at the 18-yard line, dashes inside the five, where he fumbles--only to see teammate Jabari Holloway recover in the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown.
*
4 With the Notre Dame comeback underway and USC struggling to sustain drives, punter Mike MacGillivray shanks a punt out of bounds for 11 yards. Notre Dame takes over at the USC 43, and drives for a field goal to cut the lead to five points with 8:07 remaining.
*
5 Van Raaphorst launches a pass from the USC 41, and freshman Kareem Kelly catches it at the five and is ruled down at the one on the final play of the first quarter, and USC’s Chad Morton carries the ball in for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead early in the second.
