IRVINE
A 50-year-old Irvine man who became paralyzed after an accident at Alton Parkway and Muirlands Boulevard filed a personal injury claim against the city last week.
Robert V. Willis was struck by a car while riding his bicycle with a friend across the intersection in November 1998, according to police reports. The accident, which knocked Willis about 100 feet from his bike, left him a quadriplegic and mentally impaired, said Newport Beach attorney Paul J. Gutierrez.
Police later cited 22-year-old Miranda Goldstein of Aliso Viejo for a red-light violation.
Willis is seeking damages in excess of $10,000 from the city, alleging that the city was negligent in building and maintaining such a dangerous intersection.
Police report that Alton and Muirlands is one of Irvine’s top 10 intersections for accidents, and they chose the site to have the city’s first camera installed to catch red-light violators.
