North Carolina’s plunge from a top-10 program to last place in the Atlantic Coast Conference over a two-year period will cost Coach Carl Torbush his job, sources told the Associated Press on Thursday.
Torbush, 2-0 in bowl games but 10-13 overall since replacing Mack Brown, will be fired after Saturday’s season finale against Duke.

Texas Tech officials declined comment on a report that Red Raider Coach Spike Dykes will quit after Saturday’s game against Oklahoma. Houston television station KRIV reported that Dykes will announce his retirement after the game in Lubbock. . . . Clemson running back Javis Austin had his right eye removed after what police say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Austin, 21, was in critical but stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. . . . Kevin McDougal rushed for 200 yards and a touchdown and threw for another as Colorado State ended a two-game losing streak to its archrival, beating Air Force, 41-21, at Fort Collins, Colo.
