*Tailback Manuel White of Valencia, who became the third player in region history to rush for more than 6,000 yards in his varsity career, has committed to UCLA.
The 6-foot-3, 218-pound senior called Gary Bernardi, UCLA assistant coach, on Monday night to tell the Bruins of his decision. He will cancel a recruiting visit to Arizona State.
SOFTBALL
Pitcher Kathryn Nevard of Camarillo signed at letter of intent with Illinois, which begins Division I play in 2001--her first season.
Nevard, The Times’ 1999 Ventura County pitcher of the year, chose the Fighting Illini over Maryland and UC San Diego.
Nevard allowed only 46 hits in 154 innings and struck out 173 last season for the Pacific View champion Scorpions.
