An unearned run in the seventh inning gave North Carolina Wesleyan the winning margin in a 6-5 victory over Cal Lutheran in the second round of the NCAA Division III baseball playoffs Saturday in Salem, Va.

The Kingsmen (32-13) led, 5-2, after Brad Smith hit a two-run home run in the third inning.

Cal Lutheran tied the game, 2-2, in the first when Clint Britt, Brian Malchow, Smith and Nick Lawson hit consecutive two-out singles.

The Battling Bishops (39-9) tied the game with two runs in the sixth. A wild pitch by reliever Wayne Mahaffey, who took the loss, helped fuel the rally. He gave up four hits and no earned runs in four innings.

The Kingsmen will play Marietta (Ohio) at 9 a.m. PDT today in an elimination game.

* Jordan Olson, who led Crescenta Valley to its third consecutive league title, has been selected Pacific League co-most valuable player.

Jim Delzell of Hoover was chosen coach of the year.

* Shane Miranda and Garrett Valencia were selected Pacific View League co-most valuable players.

Matt Merricks of Oxnard was chosen pitcher of the year and Scott Cline of Camarillo was selected coach of the year.

* Artin Sedighan of Viewpoint was selected Liberty League most valuable player.

SOFTBALL

* Jodie Cox of Quartz Hill High has been selected Golden League player of the year, becoming the first player to win the award four times.

Cox, whose 29 career home runs rank second in Southern Section history, has committed to Cal State Fullerton.

Kristi Speir of Antelope Valley was chosen coach of the year.

* Shortstop Cara Blumfield of El Camino Real has been chosen West Valley League player of the year. Blumfield, who has committed to Boston College, led the Conquistadores to the City title.

* Pitcher Meredith Cervenka of Crescenta Valley was selected Pacific League most valuable player.

* Kathryn Nevard of Camarillo was selected Pacific View League most valuable player and Nichole Victoria of Hueneme was chosen coach of the year.

FOOTBALL

* After two weeks of spring practice, Hart has picked junior-to-be Kyle Matter to replace All-American Kyle Boller as its starting quarterback next season.

VOLLEYBALL

* B.J. Capili of Channel Islands was selected Pacific View League most valuable player.

Dave Hall of Channel Islands was chosen coach of the year.

MISCELLANY

* The Dean Bradshaw Basketball Camp will be June 28-July 2 and July 5-9 at Simi Valley High for boys and girls in grades 3-8.
