Last year, the California Poison Control System received nearly 300,000 calls statewide from people worried about poisons.
About 80% of the calls involved some kind of exposure.
Although the most common concerns were about medicine and household cleaning products, the service also received calls about food poisoning, poisonous plants, bites and stings.
Poison specialists are available 24 hours a day to answer questions, and experts are available to assist doctors--all free of charge.
