The Ocean View School District and Ocean View Teachers Assn. are still at odds after months of contract negotiations. Both sides, which reached an impasse in December, recently met with a state mediator for the second time. “They seemed to make an offer that they knew would not be acceptable,” said Mary Ellen Berumen, president of the teachers association.
John Tennant, assistant superintendent of human resources, said the district is similarly disappointed “because throughout this whole process . . . the teachers association has [presented] negotiations proposals that have not changed.”
The next mediation date is May 12. Both bargaining teams will discuss moving from mediation to a more formal process that involves a member from each team and a third, unbiased member.
The panel will review arguments from both sides and offer a nonbinding recommendation.
