Girl Scout’s Project Wins Highest Honor

A 17-year-old Thousand Oaks girl has been awarded the Girl Scouts’ highest honor for a project in which she collected new and used clothing for underprivileged women, expectant mothers and rape victims.

Tandy Elizabeth Westmiller will receive the Girl Scout Gold Award pin, along with awards for 10 years of membership and for her participation in many smaller projects, in a ceremony to be held June 5 in Thousand Oaks.

Tandy, a junior at Thousand Oaks High School, brought attention to her clothing project by guest speaking at several women’s clubs in the county.

“It was really hard for me to decide what I wanted to do for a project, but I figured because it was Girl Scouts, I should do something for women,” Tandy said.

Donated business suits will go to Dress for Success, a Los Angeles program that helps women with job interviews, and maternity clothes will be given to the Crisis Pregnancy Center in Thousand Oaks.

Sweatsuits and other clothing will go to the Rape Coalition in Ventura for victims who need a change at a hospital or police station.
