Inmate’s Capture Ends 2-Day Manhunt
A killer who broke out of Texas’ most secure prison and fled nearly naked into the surrounding swamps was captured, two days later, hiding in a tree. Clifford Jones, 33, was wearing only boxer shorts and offered no resistance. Warden Rick Thaler said his only noticeable injuries were scratches and insect bites. Jones, serving 26 years for murder, the attempted murder of a Dallas police officer and assaulting a guard, had been the object of an intensive manhunt since he fled Sunday from the Estelle Unit’s high-security section. He spent two days and nights dodging about 300 law enforcement officers and never made it off the grounds. Jones was charged with escape and taken to prison near Wichita Falls, Texas.
