Huntington Beach High announced the hiring of two varsity coaches.
Tony DiMarco will coach the boys’ cross-country team, Huntington Beach Athletic Director Dave Van Hoorebeke said. DiMarco, who ran cross-country at Tustin High, Golden West and Long Beach State, replaces Carlos Venegas.
Erin Rands, who teaches physical education at Huntington Beach, will take over the girls’ tennis team for Morio Parker, the women’s tennis coach at Golden West who also led the Oilers the last two seasons.
CROSS-COUNTRY
* Diane Hale has resigned as girls’ cross-country coach at El Toro, a position she held for 23 years.
“After 39 years of teaching, it’s hard as heck for me to leave,” Hale said. “But I want some time for me, I want to go play tennis and golf.
“I don’t think many coaches could say in this day and age, I have enjoyed the kids so immensely, and I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed the parents as much as the kids.”
Hale will continue to teach at the school.
VOLLEYBALL
* Jim Daugherty, who coached the El Toro girls’ volleyball team for four seasons, has resigned to take on additional class load as an instructor, assistant principal Chuck Hinman said.
* Harry Brooks, a first-year coach at El Toro, resigned as the boys’ volleyball coach. Brooks resigned because of his daily commute from Brea, Hinman said.
