Dog Park for Oxnard
I am trying to establish a dog park in Oxnard. A very large city park exists on 5th Street opposite the airport, and an area could be fenced for dogs. I have written two letters to Oxnard Mayor Manuel Lopez and left a message for a call back at the parks department. There has not been any response to my inquiries.
Dog parks exist in many cities in the United States, and one very recent opening is in Calabasas. We are forced to either drive to Calabasas (60 miles, round-trip) or break city ordinances by unleashing our dogs at other parks or the beach.
Some reasons for a dog park:
* An exercised dog is healthier and happier.
* A fenced dog park is a safe environment.
* It’s a good place for people and dogs to socialize. Dogs need this socialization just like people.
* Exercised dogs are less likely to be “problem dogs†in their neighborhoods (less barking, less property damage).
* Most cities have ordinances that disallow unleashed dogs in city parks and on beaches.
* People can share experiences and problem-solving methods that have been successful in training their dogs.
* In addition, it is understood that people will pick up after their dogs.
Research has shown that dogs promote better mental and physical health for their owners. They become a good friend and provide unconditional love as well.
