Despite Mayoral No, New Budget Is Passed

For the 33rd year in a row, the city has adopted a balanced budget.
But the council was not unanimous in its approval Tuesday night of the city’s $132-million budget for the 1999-2000 fiscal year and $120 million for the following year. Mayor Linda Parks was in the minority on the 4-1 vote.
Parks opposed spending $16.2 million on the controversial Hill Canyon Recreational Facility and $100,000 to build a new City Council dais.
The two items are part of $98 million worth of capital projects the city will fund over the next two years.
The budget for the 1999-2000 fiscal year also calls for adding five full-time police officers, increasing the number to 99.
Parks had also asked that money be added to the budget for additional public transportation, such as a trolley for Thousand Oaks Boulevard, a bus from schools to the city’s teen center or an additional subsidized taxi. The request was turned down.
