Incense Left Burning Causes Apartment Fire

A stick of incense that was left burning on a bed sparked an apartment fire Saturday that caused an estimated $90,000 in damage, authorities said.
The blaze broke out about noon in a second-story apartment in the 9800 block of Jamestown Street, said Ventura City Fire Battalion Chief Mike Maher.
Resident Teresa Gonzales was home in the shower when the fire started, Maher said. After being alerted by a smoke detector, she tried putting out the flames but was unsuccessful, Maher said.
Gonzales was not injured, but several of her pets were unaccounted for, including a cat and a bird, officials said.
Firefighters doused the flames in about 10 minutes. The blaze caused about $50,000 in smoke and fire damage to the bedroom and living room and $40,000 in damage to appliances and Gonzales’ belongings, Maher said.
The Red Cross was assisting Gonzales with overnight housing.
