The Virtual Awards

It’s ironic the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences will not recognize its own child (“An Emmy Awards Debate: What Makes ‘Donkey Kong’ Run?” by Charles Solomon, June 1).
Performance animation should be recognized as a unique performance-driven art form while it evolves. It is an exciting collaboration between performer and animator for which a separate category should be created.
“Motion capture” is a term that cuts the heart out of it. When an actor creates voice and movement in real time, it is akin to live theater. Why not call it “emotion capture”?
Or, better yet, don’t fret over the Emmy Awards. I believe in the not-too-distant future we may see a real-time performance animated character thanking its mother, and accepting a special category prize, at the Virtual Tony Awards.
