Indonesia’s Campaign Season Ends

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Indonesians woke up today to find virtually all traces of the country’s historic election campaign gone from their streets.
Today is the first of a two-day “cooling-off” period before voters go to the polls Monday in their first democratic election since 1955.
Late Friday, party workers were scraping posters and other campaign materials from walls around Jakarta, the capital, leaving only a few inaccessible flags and some graffiti as reminders of the upcoming election.
The last day of official campaigning was marred by violence. Police opened fire in Jakarta and the central Java town of Pekalongan on Friday as clashes broke out between supporters of rival parties.
