Laguna Hills Dominates Invitational
Laguna Hills had 10 top-three finishers on its way to 190.5 points and the team title Saturday at the Laguna Hills wrestling Tournament.
Diamond Bar finished second with 145.4 points, and Irvine (141) was third.
Laguna Hills’ Victor Ha was selected the most valuable wrestler for the lower-weight group. Ha defeated Daniel Jacobs of Santa Monica in the 121-pound class.
Diamond Bar’s Chris Vallance was selected MVP for the upper weight group. Vallance won the title match with a pin in 50 seconds.
At the Corona Centennial wrestling invitational:
University wins two--Ryan Barbour and Francisco Gamboa each won their weight classes for University, each defeating four opponents in the 17-school tournament.
Gamboa improved to 36-0, taking the title at 189 pounds. At 171 pounds, Barbour took first place, improving his record to 28-1.
In the Edison wrestling tournament:
Katella wins--Katella won seven individual titles to capture the team championship. Nate Neemia won at 215, Roman Marlon won at 189 and Danny Rooks took the title at 171 for Katella.
Edison finished third, led by Matt Ayala, who won at 130, and Jason Mendoza at 112.
In Golden West League boys’ basketball:
No. 7 Ocean View 69, No. 8 Tustin 54--Tony Dow scored 22 points and had five steals and Wes Bacchus had 18 points for host Ocean View (18-4, 6-0), which swept Tustin (16-7, 4-2) this season. Ocean View held Tustin to only eight second-quarter points, led by the defensive play of Casey Lawson who had four steals in the game.
In the Olympic League:
Calvary Chapel 56, Whittier Christian 42--Brett Young scored 23 points, including four three-pointers, and Joshua Sherman added 17 to lead Calvary Chapel (13-9, 6-2).
Orange Lutheran 56, Cerritos Valley Christian 47--Jason Whieldon scored 29 for Orange Lutheran (11-9, 5-3).
Maranatha 55, Brethren Christian 48--Bryan Pistole scored 22 to lead Maranatha (14-9, 6-2).
Chris Austed had 13 for Brethren Christian (5-17, 1-7).
In Olympic league girls’ basketball:
Calvary Chapel 80, Whittier Christian 22--Marcene Guerrero scored 20 points and Cathy Joens had 16 for Calvary Chapel (17-5, 8-0).
Orange Lutheran 41, Cerritos Valley Christian 36--Nicole Grady had 18 points and nine rebounds for Orange Lutheran (12-8, 6-2).
In nonleague girls’ basketball:
Santa Margarita 56, Dana Hills 21--Vanessa Ferragamo scored 16 points and Danielle Bennett added 15 for visiting Santa Margarita (14-8), which led 31-15 at the half.
Woodbridge 43, Costa Mesa 32--Bryn Riley scored 16 for host Woodbridge (14-8), which led 27-14 at the half. Costa Mesa is 15-7.
In Olympic league boys’ soccer:
Calvary Chapel 4, Whittier Christian 0--Senior Tim Metzger scored his 16th and 17th goal of the season for Calvary Chapel (8-9-1, 5-3). Metzger’s goals also gave him 70 for his career. Brian Cripe also scored twice, his 14th and 15th of the season.
Whittier Christian is (4-13-1, 1-6).
Orange Lutheran 1, Cerritos Valley Christian 1--Jeff Renevier scored in the 68th minute to tie it for Orange Lutheran (16-3-3, 7-0-1).
