Annette Bening, above, stars in the psychological thriller “In Dreams,†as a woman whose dreams foreshadow real-life nightmares. Robert Downey Jr. plays a killer who is obsessed with her. The film, which is directed by Neil Jordan and also features Aidan Quinn and Stephen Rea, opens Friday in general release.

“Varsity Blues†stars “Dawson’s Creek’s†James Van Der Beek as a second-string high school quarterback dealing with the pressures of community and parents. Jon Voight is the small-town team’s hard-driving coach. The comedy opens Friday in general release.

Theater

OK, so Leonardo Di Caprio isn’t on board for “Titanic: A New Musical.†Nevertheless, the first national tour for the multiple Tony Award-winning production by Peter Stone and Maury Yeston, about the great ship’s fateful voyage and the lives of its crew and passengers, arrives at the Ahmanson Theatre today.

Danny Glover and Nobu McCarthy headline in East West Players’ premiere of Philip Kan Gotanda’s drama “Yohen,â€about an elderly African American/Japanese couple’s marital struggles. The Robey Theatre Co. co-production opens Wednesday at the David Henry Hwang Theater.

Dance

The infallibly creative Pilobolus Dance Theatre appears Friday in the Smothers Theatre of Pepperdine University in Malibu, then moves to Glendale for a performance next Sunday in the Alex Theatre.

Opera

In her L.A. Opera debut, Japanese soprano Yoko Watanabe sings the title role in Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly†in the seven-performance revival beginning tonight. As Pinkerton, Richard Leech sings one of his signature roles. Conductor Marco Guidarini presides, and Christopher Harlan is stage director. It runs through Jan. 28 at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

Pop Music

Bad Religion has been carrying the punk-rock flame for nearly 20 years now. The band’s latest album, “No Substance,†continues its tradition of unflinching social criticism set to elemental riffs. The group, with lead singer Greg Graffin, above, plays the Glass House on Wednesday and the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on Friday.

Art

“One Woman’s Work: The Elizabeth Holmes Fisher Collection,†opening Tuesday at USC’s Fisher Gallery, pays homage to the Los Angeles collector who founded the Gallery in 1939. Selections include works by Camille Corot, Winslow Homer, Thomas Cole, Francis Cotes and many others.

Jazz

“Three Play,†a notable straight-ahead group consisting of altoist John Gross, guitarist Larry Koonse and bassist Putter Smith, will be doing the town this week: Monday at the Jazz Bakery, Tuesday at Rocco, Friday at the L.A. County Museum of Art and Saturday at Bonaventure Brewing.

Nominated for six Golden Globes, Peter Weir’s “The Truman Show†is a funny, terrifying examination of the media. Jim Carrey, in a touching, subdued turn, plays a man who realizes he has been the subject of a TV series since birth. Ed Harris is splendid in support. It arrives Tuesday.
