Phouangmaly Pravongviengkham
Irvine Valley, Sophomore
Basketball
Pravongviengkham, a point guard from Huntington Beach High, turned in four consecutive solid performances in leading the Lasers to the championship of the Fullerton tournament last week. She scored 65 points, had 15 steals and 21 assists in four games. She had 17 points in a 67-55 victory over Fullerton in the title game and was selected as the tournament’s most valuable player.
Carlos Romero
Santa Ana, Freshman
Basketball
Romero, a point guard from Katella High, scored 43 points in the Santa Ana tournament but none as important as the final five. With the score tied, 67-67, in the title game against Saddleback, he had a three-point play with 34 seconds left. He then stole the inbound pass, was fouled and made both free throws and Santa Ana went on to win, 74-70. He was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
