Safety Precautions Urged for Americans

The U.S. Embassy in Cairo warned Americans to take security precautions in Egypt because of threats from “extremist elements.” In its statement, the embassy said it had “received reliable information that extremist elements may be planning imminent, unspecified attacks against U.S. interests in Egypt.” It urged Americans “to remain vigilant and take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness.” Security at most U.S. embassies has been tightened since the Aug. 7 embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania that killed 224 people, including 12 Americans.
