Belmont Site

I was shocked to read that possible oil contamination had been “discovered” at the Belmont Learning Center site just west of downtown (Dec. 25).

You don’t have to be a geologist, soil engineer or LAUSD manager to know that the Belmont site is in the middle of an oil field “discovered” by Edward L. Doheny nearly 100 years ago.

The field ran from near Glendale and Beverly boulevards northeast through the Belmont site to near Chavez Ravine, just to the edge of Chinatown.

Unbelievable that none of the well-paid experts who made the environmental survey could miss the oil field since some of the wells were (may be still) pumping nearby.
