Olivet Nazarene 92, The Master’s 78--Joey Penberthy had 21 points to lead four players who scored in double figures for Master’s (19-12) in a nonconference game at Olivet Nazarene in Kankakee, Ill.
Master’s also got 16 points from Todd Whittington, 13 from Reggie McFerren and 10 from Jacy Armbruster, but the Mustangs were outrebounded, 38-23, and Olivet Nazarene made 10 three-point shots.
Lee Coomler had 26 points, including 12 on three-point baskets, for Olivet Nazarene.
BASEBALL
Loyola 14, CS Northridge 9--Tim Arroyo had three hits and Eric Horvat had two for Northridge, which rallied from a 4-2 deficit to take an 8-6 lead in the sixth inning but fell in a nonconference game at Loyola Marymount.
Horvat doubled, Arroyo singled and both scored in a four-run sixth inning for the Matadors (11-11). Loyola Marymount, however, responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.
The Lions (8-8) collected 19 hits, including a home run and a double by Westlake High graduate Matt Riordan. Kennedy product Jack Cassel (1-0) picked up the victory in relief of starter Ben Bonilla.
Cassel came on with one out in the sixth. After allowing a two-run double to Dan Phillips and throwing a run-scoring wild pitch, he settled down and retired the side. He gave up three hits and two walks and had no strikeouts.
Cal Lutheran 15-16, Caltech 1-6--The Kingsmen completed a three-game Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series sweep of the Beavers at Caltech.
Jeremy Schlosser and Brian Melchow each had three hits in the opener for Cal Lutheran, which outscored the Beavers, 63-9, in the three-game set.
The Kingsmen (9-3, 8-1) pounded out 19 hits in the second game, including a pair of triples by Melchow, who drove in five runs.
Canyons 12, Merced 5--Manny Bernal and Ryan McKnight each had three hits and Sean Zortman pitched seven innings for the Cougars (6-10) in a nonconference game at Canyons.
Bernal drove in two runs and McKnight scored twice.
Zortman (2-2), who had no strikeouts or walks, induced Merced into 13 groundouts.
Mike Granger and Steve Lombardi each had two hits for Canyons.
Granger hit a two-run single in the Cougars’ five-run fifth inning and Lombardi had a two-run single to highlight a four-run seventh inning.
SOFTBALL
Matador Invitational--Host Northridge split a pair of games at its tournament, opening with a 6-5 loss to Oregon before defeating San Diego State, 7-2.
The Matadors took a 5-3 lead into the seventh inning against Oregon (7-4), but reliever Jessica Creith (0-1) was touched for three runs.
Ashlie Hayes had three hits, including a double, and scored three runs for Northridge.
The Matadors (6-3) snapped a 1-1 tie with a six-run sixth against San Diego State (3-9).
The big blow of the inning was a grand slam by pinch-hitter Chastity Johnson.
