Childress Leads Mayfair Into II-A Final
Josh Childress, one of the top sophomores in the Southland, helped lead Lakewood Mayfair into a Southern Section championship game Friday night with another outstanding performance.
Childress scored 24 points and Jesus Miranda added 22 as Mayfair defeated defending Division II state champion Santa Margarita, 64-53, in a Division II-A semifinal at Irvine Woodbridge.
Mayfair outscored Santa Margarita, 20-6, in the fourth quarter.
Childress also scored 24 points and made several clutch shots in unseeded Mayfair’s 69-65 quarterfinal victory over third-seeded Pasadena Muir on Wednesday.

Inglewood 63, Ocean View 45--Sandy Fletcher and Skip Esene each scored 15 points for the top-seeded Sentinels in a II-A semifinal at Morningside.
Lakwood Artesia 78, Rialto Eisenhower 51--Jason Kapono scored 32 points and had 11 rebounds and Jack Martinez scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds for the defending champion Pioneers in a I-AA quarterfinal at La Palma Kennedy.
Corona Centennial 89, Moreno Valley Valley View 88--Jamaal Williams, who scored 33 points, banked in the winning shot from five feet with seven seconds left in overtime in a I-AA quarterfinal at Moreno Valley.
Long Beach Jordan 57, Chino Hills Ayala 52--Travon Bryant scored 19 points for Jordan, which made five free throws down the stretch for the I-AA quarterfinal victory at Brea Olinda.
Glendora 64, La Puente Nogales 43--Casey Jacobsen scored 28 points and Chris Clark added 17 for the defending champion Tartans in a I-A quarterfinal at Azusa.
Santa Ana Mater Dei 72, Moreno Valley 54--Forward Mike Bayer had 21 points for the second-seeded Monarchs in a I-A quarterfinal at Ocean View.
San Bernardino Pacific 64, Santa Barbara 58--Shaun Ballard scored 12 points in the first quarter and made two key three-pointers in the fourth quarter in the I-A quarterfinal victory at Santa Barbara College.
Moreno Valley Rancho Verde 81, Newport Harbor 70--J.S. Nash scored 26 points and Brandon Shaw had 22 for Rancho Verde in a II-AA quarterfinal at Perris.
Cerritos Gahr 63, Brea Olinda 61--Senior guard Anthony Davis drove the lane and passed to sophomore forward Tajuan Jackson, who made the winning shot with 1.7 seconds left in a II-AA quarterfinal at Cerritos.
Compton Dominguez 74, La Habra Sonora 59--Marcus Moore scored 19 points and had nine assists and Tyson Chandler had 16 points and eight rebounds for the defending champion Dons in a II-AA quarterfinal at Compton College.
Pasadena 60, Redondo Union 50--Jason Ridley scored 20 points and George Dejohnette scored all 15 of his points in the second half for the Bulldogs in the II-AA quarterfinal victory at Occidental College.
Pasadena outscored the Sea Hawks, 23-9, in the third quarter.
Andrew Zahn scored 27 points for Redondo.
Torrance Bishop Montgomery 70, Pomona 60--Errick Craven scored 21 points and Derrick Craven had 18 for the Knights in a III-AA semifinal at Garey.
Gardena Serra 61, Santa Fe Springs St. Paul 59--Ryan Odums made a layup with two seconds left as the Cavaliers won a IV-AA semifinal at El Camino College.
Verbum Dei 77, Mojave 46--Marlon Parmer made five three-pointers and finished with 34 points for the Eagles in the IV-A semifinal victory at Boron.
Crossroads 73, Santa Maria St. Joseph 56--Isiah Fox scored 20 points for the Roadrunners in a IV-A semifinal at West L.A. College.
Oxnard Santa Clara 81, Palos Verdes Chadwick 69--Nick Jones scored 31 points as the Saints won a V-AA quarterfinal at Chadwick.
Pacific Hills 56, Long Beach St. Anthony 55--Rodney Harvey made a four-foot shot with two seconds left as Pacific Hills won a V-AA quarterfinal at St. Anthony.
Price 69, West L.A. Baptist 42--Chris Alexander scored 22 points for Price in a V-A semifinal at Inglewood.
