VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A man was convicted Tuesday of attempting to burn a cross on the lawn of an interracial couple, but he was acquitted of a conspiracy charge.
Richard J. Elliott, 19, who lives next door to the couple in a rural neighborhood near the North Carolina border, stood quietly as the verdict was read. He faces as much as five years in prison and a $2,500 fine on the charge of attempting to burn a cross with the intent to intimidate.
Elliott was one of three white teens arrested in the incident.
