Villa Park Rallies to Win at Home

Trailing by one going into the fourth quarter, Villa Park scored five fourth-quarter goals to defeat Canyon, 9-6, in Century League girls’ water polo Tuesday.

The victory gives the Spartans their third consecutive league title. Kristyn Pulver scored four goals and Shari Meyer scored twice for second-ranked Villa Park, which hosted its first game since the pool was vandalized Jan. 22. The Spartans close the regular season Friday against Marina.

In another Century League game:

No. 9 Foothill 24, Orange 2--Junior Daylene Coberly scored eight goals for Foothill (14-9, 4-1). Goaltender Becky Helm had 10 saves for the Knights.

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 9, Sunny Hills 7--Laura McNabb scored four goals and Mackenzie Nolan two for the Raiders (13-6, 8-1).

Troy 12, Fullerton 8--Amy Altomare, Jeralyn Terry and Kendra Carney each scored twice for Troy (12-7, 8-1).

In the South Coast League:

San Clemente 12, Mission Viejo 5--Kristy Carbone scored three goals and Christina Kuna, Shelly Applebee and Kristi Peter each scored two to lead the Tritons (12-11, 4-0).

In Century League boys’ basketball:

Villa Park 54, Orange 51--Villa Park (18-9, 8-1) was 10 for 10 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter after being outscored, 20-9, in the third quarter. Matt MacGinnis led the Spartans with 14 points.

Foothill 81, Santa Ana Valley 53--Alex Rasmussen had 30 points, including six three-pointers, and county assist leader Drew Buford had 13 assists for Foothill (18-6, 5-4 in league).

In the Sunset League:

No. 10 Los Alamitos 77, Huntington Beach 39--Andrew Pleick scored 14 points and had nine rebounds to help Los Alamitos (19-6, 9-0) remain undefeated in league.

Fountain Valley 65, Edison 40--Ryan Moreau scored 14 of his 19 points during Fountain Valley’s 41-16 run in the second half. The Barons improve to 17-8, 6-3.

Marina 87, Esperanza 83 (OT)--Dustin Kaatz (19 points) scored nine points during Marina’s 15-11 run in overtime. Scott Rivera scored 20 points, Scot Austin had points 18 and 12 rebounds and Jeff Hung made six three-pointers for the Vikings (15-10, 6-3).

In the Pacific Coast League wrestling finals:

Laguna Hills dominates--Six wrestlers won individual championships to lead Laguna Hills to a first-place finish with 199 points. Jeff Tufts (112 pounds), Victor Ha (119 pounds) and Bryan Weber (125 pounds) won by pins to lead the Hawks.
