Man Given Two Years in Cross Burning

HUNTINGTON BEACH — A man who burned a cross on the front lawn of a Jewish family’s house was sentenced to two years in prison Friday.
A jury had found Daniel Patrick Carr, 18, of Huntington Beach guilty of desecrating a religious symbol but had deadlocked on the more serious charge of arson, which would have made the cross burning a hate crime.
In rejecting Carr’s plea for probation, Orange County Superior Court Judge Robert Gallivan said the defendant “never demonstrated any remorse about the fear he has caused the family.”
“This truly is a tragedy for the victims and for the defendant, [but] there has to come a point where the defendant has to assume responsibility,” the judge said.
Two other teenagers were charged in the cross burning last May outside the home of David and Barbara Shostak. Both pleaded guilty and were sentenced to the California Youth Authority.
