Gretzky Puts Another Feather in His Cap

Wayne Gretzky reached another goal-scoring milestone and set up Adam Graves for a pair of first-period scores as the New York Rangers beat the Vancouver Canucks, 8-4, Thursday night at New York.
Gretzky scored his 1,071st goal as a pro, tying him with Gordie Howe for total career goals in the NHL and old World Hockey Assn.
Gretzky left the game shortly before the end when he was sent into the boards by Bill Muckalt. He was not seriously injured and should play in the Rangers’ next game.

Backup goalie Chris Terreri made 36 saves for his ninth career shutout as New Jersey beat St. Louis, 2-0, to tie a team record with the Devils’ fifth straight road victory. . . . Felix Potvin stopped 37 shots for his first win as an Islander and New York beat Boston, 5-4, at Boston. . . . Mikael Renberg and Valeri Zelepukin scored 28 seconds apart in the third period as Philadelphia beat Montreal, 5-2, at Philadelphia. . . . Rick Tocchet scored two goals as Phoenix beat San Jose, 3-1, at Phoenix. . . . Andrei Nazarov scored only 37 seconds into the third period to give Calgary its third tie in as many games, 2-2, against Nashville at Calgary.
